INCOTERM DAP
Meaning and responsibilities
Incoterm DAP stands for Delivered at Place. Under Incoterms 2020, it means the seller delivers the goods to a named destination, ready for unloading.
This rule applies to any mode of transport. It is commonly used when the seller arranges transport to the destination, while the buyer manages import clearance.
What Incoterm DAP covers
Incoterm DAP is a delivery term, not a customs solution. It defines who bears the transport risk, where delivery takes place, and which party handles import formalities.
The named place must be stated clearly. If the destination is vague, the parties may disagree about when delivery is complete and who is responsible at the final step.
Seller and buyer duties under Incoterm DAP
Under this Incoterm, the seller is responsible for export-side obligations and transport to the named place. The buyer normally takes over import clearance, duties, and unloading once the goods arrive.
DAP vs DDP
DAP and DDP are often confused, but they are not the same. Under DAP, the buyer handles import duties and customs clearance; under DDP, the seller takes on those import-side responsibilities.
That difference is important in practice because DAP keeps the buyer involved in the destination-country import process. For many businesses, this makes the term easier to use when the buyer already has a local import structure.
Common mistakes with Incoterm DAP
A frequent mistake is assuming DAP includes unloading. It does not, unless the contract specifically changes that point.
Another mistake is using a vague destination description. A strong DAP clause should name the exact place, for example: “DAP, buyer’s warehouse, full street address, city, country, Incoterms 2020.”
Practical use of DAP
Choosing the right Incoterm helps avoid disputes over cost, risk, and delivery. Incoterm DAP is a practical option when the seller wants to arrange transport to the final place, but the buyer wants control over import clearance and taxes.
