CUSTOMS COMPLIANCE IN FRANCE

1. Can you introduce yourself and tell us about your role at Customs Complete?

I’m Souaad, Customs and Logistics Coordinator at Customs Complete. I am responsible for coordinating the process of customs declarations and logistics operations in France. This includes ensuring compliance in france  with all customs regulations, coordinating the timely submission of declarations, and liaising with all involved parties to resolve any issues.

2. What’s your background in customs clearance, supply chain, or compliance?

I have an academic background in Management and International Trade, with two years of experience in French  Customs and one year in Import and Export Coordination.

These experiences have taught me how to navigate various customs procedures, manage compliance requirements, and optimize logistics strategies. They have also taught me that this industry requires attention to detail, effective communication, and the ability to adapt quickly to changing regulations.

Additionally, these roles have reinforced my problem-solving skills, especially when resolving issues that arise during customs clearance and international shipments, ensuring efficient operations across borders.

I speak four languages: English, French, Arabic and Amazigh.

3. What does a typical working day look like for you?

A typical working day for me starts with checking emails to ensure there are no unread or unresponded messages. After that, I review the ongoing orders to check for any updates. Then, I focus on new orders or requests, always prioritizing tasks based on urgency and importance to maintain better organization, time management, and reduce stress.

4. What do you enjoy most about working in this industry?

I enjoy the diversity in the customs industry. It allows me to work with a wide range of industries and products, while collaborating with stakeholders from all over the world. Each task brings new challenges and there are always updates and changes in regulations, which means there’s always something new to learn.

What I find rewarding is solving problems and seeing operations run smoothly. The dynamic nature of customs and the chance to be part of global trade keep me motivated and engaged.

5. What are the biggest challenges businesses face with customs clearance in France?

In my opinion, the main challenges businesses face with customs clearances in France often are related to delays and compliance issues. As a broker, our responsibility is to ensure that all documentation is compliant with customs requirements, while also making sure that the clearance process is completed on time.

Delays are often caused by non-compliance or missing documents, which is why it’s important for us to address these issues promptly. Additionally, many clients may not be fully aware of the procedures they could take advantage of. It’s our role to guide them, ensuring they provide all necessary compliant documentation to prevent any complications with customs.

6. How do you help clients manage logistics and supply chain complexities?

I believe that communication is the key, good quality communication, reactivity, and transparency would help guide the client well and ensure their satisfaction.

7. What’s one customs or compliance issue that companies often overlook?

Clients often overlook the importance of complete documentation, which can lead to delays or complications. Missing key details, such as origin statements, product classifications, or compliance declarations, can lead to inspections or issues with customs.

They may also forget to provide accurate valuations, proper certificates or licences, which are essential for smooth customs clearance. Ensuring that all necessary documentation is complete and accurate is crucial to avoid delays or penalties.

8. What makes the French customs process unique compared to other countries?

As you know, France is one of the largest entry and exit points in Europe, with a significant volume of traffic passing through its ports. Following Brexit, France’s importance grew even further due to changes in operations. Additionally, France has some unique customs procedures, such as Regime 42, among others.

9. What advice would you give to businesses importing or exporting through France?

I advise them to ensure that their entire procedure is compliant, respect regulations, and follow the legislation. I also recommend finding a reliable broker they can trust like Customs Complete.

10. Outside of work at customs complete team, what do you enjoy doing in your free time?

I really enjoy spending time on my own, such as taking long walks by myself. Another thing I love is working on Canvas. I enjoy creating art and designing templates.
